Read Write Inc Phonics

At Bishops Down, we use the Read Write Inc synthetic phonics program to teach early reading.

The scheme was introduced by Ruth Miskin and like all phonics schemes, Read Write Inc starts by teaching children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. We use the Oxford Owl resources that accompany the scheme, that includes book bag books, ditty books and word cards. There's also Fred, the Read Write Inc friendly frog, who will help the children - so you may hear your children talking about Fred Talk and Fred in Your Head - as the children learn how to say and read words.

Read Write Inc is taught in reception, Year 1 and Year 2 each morning at 9am. The children work in small groups with trained staff. Our Nursery children are introduced to Read Write Inc when they are ready, which is usually at the start of the summer term. The children can begin to complete the phonics program at the end of the autumn term in year 2, although some children may stay on the scheme longer to help them to feel confident with their sounds and fluency skills.

We also use the Read Write Inc Fresh Start and Tutoring resources to help develop confident readers throughout the school.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 weekly Class Notes will keep parents informed of phonics teaching, but here are some further parent resources from the scheme to help you to support your child's reading.
