Phonics and Spelling
Phonics
At Bishops Down, we use the Ruth Miskin, Read Write Inc phonics scheme to teach phonics in school. The scheme teaches children the sounds we use in English, the letters that represent the sounds and how to form the letters when writing.
Please find some useful links that explain the teaching of phonics further, and how parents can support children's reading at home using a range of free resources.

Spelling
Early spelling is taught through the use of RWI phonics lessons. From Year 2, classes follow progressive spelling teaching, which explores spelling patterns and rules. We aim to create confident and proficient spellers who are able to apply their word knowledge to challenging and unknown spellings.
Children are also taught to:
- Spell accurately and identify reasons for mis-spellings.
- Proof-read their spellings
- Recognise and use word origins, families and roots to build their skills
- Use dictionaries and thesauruses
